Coming soon – MOT facility at AB Motor Vehicle Services

We’re thrilled to announce that our bid to have our own MOT Testing Facility at our Gloucester garage has been accepted.

We’ve been working behind the scenes for months to submit a plan for approval. Now that we’ve been accepted, the wheels are now in motion to install and implement the testing facility. During the next few months it’s going to be busy. Groundworks will commence in October and we hope to be up and running by November. Follow us on facebook for regular updates and to track our progress.

Andrew Byrne, owner of our garage, AB Motor Vehicle Services Ltd in Gloucester has been going solo for the last few months while we plan our next business move. The garage is as busy as ever but we’ve managed to squeeze in a bit of time to get this promo video put together.

At this present time Andy is hands on answering phone calls, diagnosing vehicle issues, repairing cars, arranging MOT’s and running the day-to-day goings on. His Dad lends a hand with car collection and return and Hannah is behind the scenes managing the accounts and marketing which includes production and editing of this video!

There’s been a lot going on in the background in the last few weeks, so watch this space for more news (and videos) to come to keep you updated with what’s going on.

You can also keep in touch by following us on facebook at where we’ll talk about what’s going on at the garage as well as an insight into what our customers say about us!

We’re expanding!

New year, new start!  And what better way to begin the year by sharing our news.  Today, Andy signed a new lease for the unit next door which provides a great platform for expansion.

We’ve been steadily trading since January 2013.  After building the business from scratch, taking on an apprentice and juggling a growing family (Andy now has three under three!), our five year anniversary is marked by expanding our facility by taking on the unit next door.

If you’re already a customer then you’ll appreciate additional parking, a clear drive-way down to the premises (it’s always been quite tight, and most customers ask Andy to drive their vehicle out!) and security in the fact that AB Motor Vehicle Services are here to stay.

The team currently consists of owner, Andy and apprentice, David who are based at the garage on a daily basis.  Andy’s dad, Martin is about occasionally to help out with collections and delivery of vehicles and Hannah, Andy’s wife works behind the scenes from home.  David is soon to be semi-qualified having completed almost two years of his apprenticeship, and with the volume of work increasing, there are possibilities of taking on additional staff in the near future.

In the next few weeks the additional unit will have a new ramp installed, the electrics and lighting sorted out and a staff-room put in place.  Once it’s complete we’ll be sharing news so keep your eyes peeled.

If you’re unfamiliar with what we do then you’ll be pleased to hear that we have over 16 years experience in car servicing and repairs and can also arrange your MOT.  Our scope of knowledge is broad and we cover all makes and models as well as offering collection and delivery in the local area.

Local garage recruits first apprentice

Gloucester garage recruits apprenticeAfter steady growth the time has come for local garage AB Motor Vehicle Services Ltd to invest in new staff and embark on the apprenticeship programme that Andrew completed himself over twelve years ago.

The Bristol road garage which opened in 2013 now has a growing customer base with the need to expand to cope with demand. Business owner Andrew Byrne set out to find an apprentice in June and with the help of Gloucestershire College has recruited David Rhys-Phillips, 16, who has enrolled onto the motor vehicle apprenticeship programme. David will attend college one day a week and work at the garage for 4 days.

David has already shown commitment and enthusiasm during the summer by volunteering at the garage to get himself ahead of the game and put him in the driving seat.

“So far David’s really impressed me, I know what it’s like to be an apprentice as that’s where I first started.  I’m looking forward to passing on my knowledge and moulding David into the best technician that he can be,” says Andrew. “It’s important to attend college and get the theory behind you but that’s just a small part of it, you can’t beat getting the hands-on experience and working in a real environment”.

It’s been David’s ambition to find a garage willing to give him an opportunity.  He had applied for various positions with no success but didn’t give up and continued to apply for jobs. He passed his provisional driving licence to get a bike that would help him travel to and from work with.  David went to Millbrook Academy and achieved the necessary GCSE grades that enabled him to follow his dream.  “I was literally speechless when Andy offered me the job after search for months. He’s given me a chance so I’m going to show him that he’s made the right decision. It’s great to get stuck in at the workshop and Andy makes me think about what I’m doing.”

A second ramp has been installed to accommodate additional work however Andrew is keen to expand the business and is looking for new premises.

We will now go head to head with Ritch Hill Cycles and Roman Co who have also been shortlisted. The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony at the Gloucester Rugby Club on November 27.

Jenny Eastwood, editor of the Citizen, said: “It was incredibly difficult to choose the finalists as we had such a fantastic amount of nominations.

“These awards help celebrate those talented individuals, businesses and community groups who go the extra mile to promote Gloucester.”

We’re looking forward to the ceremony at the end of the month. It’ll be our first formal event that we’ve attended so we’ll be getting our glad rags on and making the most of it whilst keeping our fingers crossed!

Are you aware of the TAX DISC changes?

tax discOctober 2014 sees the changes in the road tax disc come into force. One of the main changes is that you no longer need to display your tax disc in your car window – unfortunately this DOESN’T mean that you don’t have to buy it though!

Here is a summary of the changes that you need to be aware of:

  • Buying a vehicle You won’t be able to purchase a car with the existing road tax, you’ll need to buy your own before using the car.
  • Selling a vehicle You won’t be able to sell a car with the existing road tax.  Once the DVLA has been notified that the car has transferred into a new name they’ll automatically issue a refund.

  • Purchasing road tax You’ll still be able to buy tax for 6 or 12 months, but in addition you’ll now be able to pay monthly (from 1 November 2014).  You can get it online or at the post office.

  • Checking tax status You can check if any car has road tax by visiting

AB Motor Vehicle Services Ltd

There’s only one AB Motor Vehicle Services LTD!

After just over a years trading we’re pleased to announce that we’ve become a LTD company. As of 2 April 2014 we’ve registered our business with Companies House which means that nobody else can take our name – although it’s a bit of a mouthful we’re excited that ‘there’s only one AB Motor Vehicle Services Ltd’.

To become limited you need to have at least two directors. The obvious choice was of course Andy (the face of AB Motor Vehicle Services!). He currently operates on his own diagnosing, fixing and maintaining your cars. He’s the first point of contact when it comes to booking your car in so will quote, carry out the work and prepare any paperwork. for you.

The second director is Hannah Byrne (Andy’s wife). She works behind the scenes and is responsible for record/book keeping, the website, social media and any marketing opportunities.

Whilst there will be a few changes behind the scenes with regards to admin and processes there won’t be any changes that directly effect our customers. You can still enjoy a professional service at affordable prices along with the extras such as collecting and delivering your car!

If you’ve not yet brought your car to us for a service, repair or MOT we’re hoping that our new status will reassure you that we’re committed to running a successful business while offering you the highest level of customer service.
